110th ANNIVERSARY

On 19th September 1899 Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, signed an edict ordering the founding of a Czech technical institute of higher education in Brno.

It was the first Czech higher-education school in Moravia with a strong commitment of its teachers and students. It became and, since then, has been until today an important centre of education and science enriching the life of Czech society. The Czech technical university in Brno experienced an enormous growth educating thousands of successful graduates and giving the world a large number of engineering experts with each of them contributing to the effort to improve the quality of life. Being faced with adversity, several times it was on the brink of destruction, however, every time the crisis could be overcome with new strength gained.

The school began with four professors and 47 students and, over those (almost) 110 years, it has reached the position of an educational institution of international renown offering state-of-the-art expert knowledge at its eight faculties in a wide range of specialisations including engineering, scientific, economic, and artistic fields. In one of the world's most prestigious international ranking of 18,000 universities published annually by The Times, BUT is regularly listed among the world's 400 to 600 best universities.

As at the time of its origin, today Brno University of Technology is still an important centre of education and science with major influence on the university and research policy. Its teachers, graduates, and students are offered jobs at renowned companies in the USA, Canada, and other advanced countries all over the world.

For the coming years, I hope that our university will remain a major player in the European educational and research space.>
